How to Decolonize Your Trauma Work

  • Why colonial trauma is the original attachment trauma, and how that severance shows up in you, not just your clients.
  • The Seven Channels of Experience™, adapted by Dr. David Mars, a whole brain-body framework for moment-to-moment attunement: sensation, movement, imaginal, emotion, auditory, visual, and energetic.
  • The language shift that moves you from “Expert Observer” to “Human Witness,” and how to name what you're feeling in session without losing your Clinical Boundaries.
  • A real case example of trusting intuitive wisdom with a grieving couple, and what happened when Laura took the relationally-oriented risk.
  • Taking trauma work outside: how land, animals, and nature become co-facilitators and co-regulators in a brainspotting session.
  • A critical, compassionate look at centering whiteness in session, and what to do instead. Pending permission review for inclusion in this paid training.

The Problem

You were trained to trust the treatment plan. Not yourself.

But what if YOU are an essential part of the treatment? If you're a trauma therapist, you've felt it: the whisper in session. Slow down. Name what's happening. Move with them. And you didn't.

You went back to your notes. You asked another thinking question. You stayed neutral, cerebral, or in your position of power as the expert. I don’t blame you, I get it. That is what we are trained to do.

Maybe you still run your intuition past another clinician before you trust it. Maybe you were told your gut is “biased,” so you learned to ignore it.
What's Really Happening Underneath

Our clinical training taught us to keep things separate. Clinical skill over here. Spiritual, cultural, and ancestral knowledge over there. Honestly, it often explicitly or implicitly teaches us to stay in our minds and disconnect from our intuitive parts.

But neutrality isn’t safe. It is a fallacy. This short training gives you examples of how to challenge traditional training that taught you to tamp down your culture, lineage, sensitivity, and intuition.

  • You are NOT unprofessional for naming what you feel in a session.
  • You are NOT unethical for trusting your body.
  • You are NOT “too much” for bringing your humanity into the work.
The Deeper Story

That self-doubt isn't a personal flaw. It's a colonial wound.

Colonization forcibly separated people from land, culture, language, ceremony, and each other. That's why it's the original attachment trauma. And systems of oppression doubled down on the message: don't trust your own inner knowing. Turn outward instead to institutions, people in positions of power, and white supremacist models of behavior.

For many therapists of the global majority, these messages are replicated in our homes, in assimilated households where survival meant leaving parts of our nativity behind. Then our training reinforced it. So this is nuanced to unlearn, and requires slowing things down and refining moment-to-moment awareness.

Decolonial trauma work asks you to unlearn that. Not by throwing out your clinical skills or ethics, but by letting your inner tributaries merge: your clinical training and your ancestral, cultural, intuitive ways of knowing. Both. Together. Grounded by ethical care, clinical rapport, and the relationship of connection as the true conduit for change and transformation.

That's not only better for your clients. It's more sustainable for you. Fragmenting is an exhausting survival response. Let’s not replicate it in our work.

Who This Is For

This is for you if you're ready to practice trauma work from your whole self.

A practice that makes room for clinical skill, intuition, lineage, culture, embodiment, ethics, and relationship together.

  • You're a trauma therapist, somatic clinician, or healer trained in modalities like EMDR, brainspotting, SE, IFS, or AEDP.
  • You often sense something in session but second-guess yourself or automatically stay quiet, neutral, or observant.
  • You've hidden parts of your lived experience, culture, native language, lineage, immigration story, or sensitivity and opted to be more “professional” instead.
  • You want to integrate decolonial and anti-oppressive practice into your clinical work, and want some guidance or “how to”.
  • You're curious about nature-based or outdoor trauma work, or already do it and want language for how to be more decolonial.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

No. This is a clinical and personal development training, not a continuing education course. You have to value this learning separately from the CE of it all in order to invest.

No. It's relevant whether you practice EMDR, brainspotting, IFS, SE, AEDP, or other forms of therapy. The Seven Channels™ deepens what you already do. You can learn more about the model and Dr. David Mars at the Transformative Couples Therapy® Institute.

Not at all. This work is about both: strong clinical skills and ethics, plus trusting the intuitive, cultural, and embodied knowing you were taught to ignore.

Being in a relationship with clients means being impacted by them, appropriately so, and sometimes reflecting that impact back to them, depending on the situation. The ritual pack gives you a sense of how you can support yourself in rooting yourself as you open. If you need more support, book a discovery call. That is what Laura's programs and communities are for.

Lifetime access. Rewatch anytime.

It's for any trauma therapist or healer who wants to practice more decolonially. It speaks especially deeply to therapists of the global majority and first-generation practitioners who are most impacted by oppressive narratives around fragmenting from our wisdom, but colonization impacts everyone.

Ready when you are

You were never meant to leave your intuition at the door.
